Manchester derby and football’s biggest local rivalries ranked by passion and ferocity, including Milan, Old Firm and north London

If you live in a city, like Glasgow or Manchester, where there is more than one team, you’ll know what it’s like on derby day.

Actually, you’re probably well aware of what it’s like way before derby day, with the building up usually lasting an entire week and in some towns even longer.

The Milan derby has always been a fiery occasion

Friendships are divided as club loyalty take over and here, talkSPORT.com looks at rivalries in football, from London to Liverpool, Manchester to Milan and beyond – focusing solely on local derbies – and assesses them by passion and ferocity, all while ignoring recent idiots who choose to ruin it for everyone.

MORE: The biggest non-local derbies in football

20) Partizan Belgrade v Red Star Belgrade: Famous for violence disguised as football passion

21

20) Partizan Belgrade v Red Star Belgrade: Famous for violence disguised as football passion – Both clubs were formed in the aftermath of World War II, with Partizan representing the army and Red Star the police. The latterÂ’s European Cup success sets them apart, but to observers outside Serbia, football in the Eternal derby is secondary, with violence coming to define the fixture. In 2015 the game was delayed because of crowd trouble, which saw 35 police officers injured.

19) Bolivar v The Strongest: Famous for Altitude, intellectuals

21

19) Bolivar v The Strongest: Famous for Altitude, intellectuals – Played at altitude in La Paz, BoliviaÂ’s Clasico Paceno sees Club Bolivar, founded by intellectuals, take on The Strongest, a team of soldiers. The nerds, however, have the upper hand overall with 28 titles to their rivalsÂ’ 12.

18) Ijsselmeervogels v SV Spakenburg: Famous for Pigs, planes, pyrotechnics

21

18) Ijsselmeervogels v SV Spakenburg: Famous for Pigs, planes, pyrotechnics – Planes overhead, fireworks, ticker tape galore, 70 per cent of the local town in attendance, and a pig on the pitch. Welcome to the Dutch third division, where the little village of Spakenburg in the north of Holland is split down the middle twice a year, and alcohol sales are banned across the whole village until the full-time whistle goes.

17) Aston Villa v Birmingham: Famous for emotion, occasional violence and Peter Enckelman –

21

17) Aston Villa v Birmingham: Famous for emotion, occasional violence and Peter Enckelman – Known as the Second City derby, Villa Park and St Andrew’s are about three miles apart and when they meet it’s usually memorable. In a 2003 match, there was a 21-man brawl, trouble in the stands, two red cards and Robbie Savage being substituted for his own safety having been headbutted by Dion Dublin. A year earlier Villa goalkeeper Enckleman’s gaffe saw him misjudge an Olof Mellberg throw-in as the ball trickled into his own net. In 2011 Alex McLeish angered both sets of fans when he left Birmingham to take over at Villa, while one fan was jailed for running onto the pitch and hitting Jack Grealish in 2019.

16) CSKA Moscow v Spartak Moscow: Famous for Political undertones

21

16) CSKA Moscow v Spartak Moscow: Famous for Political undertones – Spartak are the peopleÂ’s club. CSKA were the team of the Soviet Army, count the Russian Ministry of Defence as a shareholder and were once owned by Roman Abramovich. A case of the haves and the have-nots, then.

15) Barcelona SC v Emelec: Famous for League deciders, riots

21

15) Barcelona SC v Emelec: Famous for League deciders, riots – The youngest of our featured games was born only in 1943, when the Guayaquil neighbours first locked horns in the ‘Shipyard DerbyÂ’. It has, however, grown over the years thanks to the duoÂ’s dominance in the league and a passionate fanbase. Sadly, rioting and missiles are the norm, and the death of a young Emelec fan struck by a flare in 2007 taints EcuadorÂ’s biggest game.

14) Nacional v Penarol: Famous for Success, social divides

21

14) Nacional v Penarol: Famous for Success, social divides – The ‘Uruguayan ClasicoÂ’ is South AmericaÂ’s oldest derby and these Montevideo teams share 96 league titles between them. Originally the Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, Penarol was the team of the European immigrants, while Nacional formed in 1899 as a team for native Uruguayans. The rivalry burns as fiercely today, even if its profile remains low compared to, say, Argentine cousin Boca-River.

13) Lazio v Roma: Famous for flares and fascists

21

13) Lazio v Roma: Famous for flares and fascists – ItÂ’s slightly strange that Roma are associated with left-wing politics in the Derby della Capitale: they were founded when Mussolini merged three clubs in an attempt to create a counterpoint to the dominance of Juventus and the Milans. Lazio refused to join. Both sets of Ultras are a violent lot. Note 2004, and a riot that led to 13 arrests and 170 injured police.

12) Celtic v Rangers: Famous for Sectarianism, frequency (formerly)

21

12) Celtic v Rangers: Famous for Sectarianism, frequency (formerly) – World famous, ferocious and historic, which until recently is a match that hadnÂ’t been played since RangersÂ’ demotion in 2012. Yet their meltdown isnÂ’t the only reason for an Old Firm being outside the top 10. This was a derby fairly recently graced by Brian Laudrup, Paul Gascoigne and Henrik Larsson. The competition for Celtic just isnÂ’t there right now.

11) AC Milan v Inter: Famous for See-sawing fortunes

21

11) AC Milan v Inter: Famous for See-sawing fortunes – Size: tick. Passion: tick. Global appeal: tick. Inter held sway in the distant past, while the Rossoneri ruled the roost in the 80s and 90s. The games themselves are goose-bump inducing, with flares, flags and foul language. Zlatan Ibrahimovic summed it up: â€Å“80,000 [people]. You come out one time and the whole stadium is blue. You come out the other time, the whole stadium is red. That is what you play for – I like it when the fans are whistling me. It triggers me. I don’t know what it is but it triggers me.” Recently, though, it has been let down by a lack of games of trophy-deciding importance.

10) Benfica v Sporting Lisbon: Famous for closeness

21

10) Benfica v Sporting Lisbon: Famous for closeness – These Lisbon neighbours are too close for comfort, with just 3km separating the grounds. The problem for the Sportinguistas is that, a 2015 Cup triumph aside, their dominance is a distant memory, so the current rivalry boils down to Benfica rubbing their success in their rivalsÂ’ faces every time they visit the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

9) Fenerbahce v Galatasaray: Famous for Graeme̢۪s flagpole

21

9) Fenerbahce v Galatasaray: Famous for Graeme’s flagpole – In 2014, Galatasaray fans chose to recreate – via a gigantic stadium flag – the moment in 1996 when their then boss/psychopath Graeme Souness ran on to the Fenerbahce pitch and planted a Galatasaray flag in the middle. Somehow, that insult delighted one half of Istanbul even more than the preceding victory. A rivalry fuelled by petty hatred and chaos: we love it.

8) Everton v Liverpool: Famous for Fire and friendliness

21

8) Everton v Liverpool: Famous for Fire and friendliness – EnglandÂ’s oldest top-flight derby, which are fiery games full of red cards and goals. Loud and – at times – mutually respectful fans (witness the Hillsborough solidarity). To some, it may not be the most important derby in the north-west, but there is still plenty of bite in the Merseyside fixture.

7) Flamengo v Fluminense: Famous for Squeezing everyone in

21

7) Flamengo v Fluminense: Famous for Squeezing everyone in – The Rio derby holds the global attendance record: more than 194,000 crammed into the Maracana in 1963. Typically, it finished 0-0. Flamengo were originally a rowing club, but became a football team in 1911 after dissatisfied Fluminese players defected after a row (no pun intended) with the board. There are several rivalries in Rio, but Fla-Flu is guaranteed a full house.

6) Olympiakos v Panathinaikos: Famous for ultraviolence

21

6) Olympiakos v Panathinaikos: Famous for ultraviolence – The derby of AthensÂ’ eternal enemies can be lively. In 2012 it was abandoned after petrol bombs were set off in the stands. In 2014, Panathinaikos boss Giannis Anastasiou was floored by an object thrown from the crowd and thousands of police were deployed in the following match to try to prevent trouble, but Anastasiou still got himself sent off.

5) Arsenal v Tottenham: Famous for goalfests

21

5) Arsenal v Tottenham: Famous for goalfests – The resurgence of Tottenham is the major factor behind reigniting an age-old rivalry that stretches back to when Arsenal moved from south to north London in 1913. Arsenal used to be able to celebrate St TotteringhamÂ’s Day amid a lack of actual trophies – the day when Spurs can no longer mathematically finish above them – but even that appears to be dead.

4) Al Ahly v Zamalek: Famous for Violence on and off pitch

21

4) Al Ahly v Zamalek: Famous for Violence on and off pitch – It is no mean feat to be known as the most fearsome derby in the league when you consider the Egyptian Premier League has had to cancel seasons in recent years because of political unrest and fan violence. This is a fixture that has had to be abandoned four times and is a game dividing Cairo down the middle between the red of Al Ahly and white of Zamalek, and even sees a foreign referee flown in because all the Egyptian officials are said to have a leaning towards one of the clubs.

3) Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid: Famous for Underdogs finally biting back

21

3) Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid: Famous for Underdogs finally biting back – Hidden in the giant shadow of El Clasico, the Madrid derby was a joke. Except it wasnÂ’t funny, because everyone knew the punchline. Real won. Until recently. A cathartic victory in the 2013 Copa del Rey final (AtleticoÂ’s first win over Real since 1999) gave Atletico a taste for it. They won on their next trip to the Bernabeu, then claimed La Liga but the big, blanco elephant in the room is that Atletico came up agonisingly short against Real in the Champions League final in 2014 and 2016. At least now itÂ’s no longer a mismatch.

2) Manchester United v Manchester City: Famous for Noisy neighbours, Denis Law

21

2) Manchester United v Manchester City: Famous for Noisy neighbours, Denis Law – A friendly camaraderie before the Second World War, then it turned ugly in the 1970s. It has been amped up since the blue half of Manchester won the Abu Dhabi lottery and notable moments from recent years include CityÂ’s 6-1 embarrassment of United at Old Trafford, Michael Owen scoring a stoppage time winner in a 4-3 classic, and Wayne RooneyÂ’s overhead kick in 2011. ItÂ’s a much hyped game and rightly so.

1) Boca Juniors v River Plate: Famous for Atmosphere, intensity, resurgence

21

After a season in the lower leagues, River Plate returned to win the top tier in 2014. Great news for River, terrible news for the Buenos Aires police force. “Derby day in Buenos Aires makes the Old Firm game look like a primary school kick-about,” explains Scottish journalist Gavin Hamilton. With 70 per cent of the country said to have an allegiance one way or the other, you can see why. In November 2018, ahead of the Copa Libertadores final between the two sides, the Boca Juniors team bus was attacked by River Plate fans on its way to the game for the second leg at River's Estadio Monumental. As a result of injuries to players, the game was postponed. The final was eventually played in Madrid, Spain.

Southampton vs Liverpool: Amazing Saints line-up if Liverpool and Tottenham had not signed their best players, such as Van Dijk and Bale

Southampton welcome Premier League title challengers Liverpool to St Mary’s on Friday night.

The game, which is live on talkSPORT, will no doubt carry a sense of nostalgia for certain members of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Southampton have consistently produced academy graduates, who have dazzled on the south coast.

However, recent years have seen the Saints ravaged by bigger Premier League sides and taking their biggest talents fro them.

Take, for instance, the 2014/15 side under Ronald Koeman.

Littered with incredible stars, Southampton finished the season in seventh place, just two points behind Liverpool.

However, the club are now 16th in the Premier League and are embroiled in a relegation battle.

The slow and steady decline is no doubt linked to their conveyor belt of talent being ruthlessly exploited at seemingly every turn.

But just how could they have been had they kept their best stars?

Below, talkSPORT.com looks at how Southampton could be lining up had they not been so ruthlessly raided, especially by Tottenham and Liverpool.

GOALKEEPER – Paulo Gazzaniga

Gazzaniga was signed by former boss Mauricio Pochettino

13

Gazzaniga was signed by former boss Mauricio Pochettino

The young Argentina international is currently playing second fiddle to Hugo Lloris in north London, although that could all change following the World Cup winner’s recent woes.

Although he started his youth career with Valencia, Gazzaniga was released in 2011 and joined Gillingham on a two-year deal on the recommendation of European scout.

Just one year later, the shot-stopper was on his way to St Mary’s for their return to the Premier League and spent five years behind no.1 Fraser Forster.

The 6’5 keeper is still only 27 and could well become first choice if Lloris continues his erratic form.

SOLD TO: Tottenham Hotspur (£900k, August 2017)

RIGHT BACK – Nathaniel Clyne

Clyne became an England international while with Southampton

13

Clyne became an England international while with Southampton

Like Gazzaniga, Clyne did not come through the Southampton academy, but he certainly made his name while with the Saints.

Born and raised in south London, the right-back became a regular under Neil Warnock at Crystal Palace and made more than 100 appearances for the Eagles.

Nigel Adkins brought him to the Premier League in 2012 and Clyne went from strength to strength, earning an England cap in 2014 as a reward for his excellent displays.

A move to Liverpool in 2015 soon followed and Clyne initially excelled under Jurgen Klopp before an injury last season saw him lose his place to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

SOLD TO: Liverpool (£12.5million, July 2015)

CENTRE BACK: Toby Aldeweireld

Alderweireld was statistically superb at Southampton

13

Alderweireld was statistically superb at Southampton

Technically speaking, Alderweireld was only ever on loan at St Mary’s. However, his exceptional performances saw Tottenham swoop in ahead of the Saints when Atletico Madrid cancelled the £6.8million buy-out clause.

His time in Spain can be summed up by his Champions League final performance in 2014. With Atletico leading city rivals Real 1-0 with seven minutes to go, the defender was sent on by Diego Simeone. They lost 4-1 and he was allowed to leave on loan in the summer.

While this will come as a surprise to some fans, it proved to be the Premier League’s gain as the Belgium international dominated Premier League strikers by maintaining an incredibly high tackle success rate.

Now considered one of the best defenders in the division, the 30-year-old moved to Spurs and instantly was selected for the PFA Team of the Year.

SOLD TO: Tottenham Hotspur (£11.5million, July 2015)

CENTRE BACK: Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk is arguably the best centre-half in the world

13

Van Dijk is arguably the best centre-half in the world

The world’s most expensive defender and captain of the Netherlands, Van Dijk’s rise has been nothing short of spectacular.

A 2015 summer signing from Celtic, van Dijk wasted no time in convincing Saints supporters they had found a worthy replacement for the recently departed Alderweireld.

Blessed with tremendous physical and technical attributes, the centre-half bludgeoned opposition strikers and then had the composure to spray 70-yard passes out with either foot.

Naturally, the biggest clubs in the world came calling, and it was Liverpool who splashed the cash to bring the colossus to Anfield. Since then, he has transformed the Reds from potential Champions League qualifiers to genuine title challengers.

SOLD TO: Liverpool (£75million, January 2018)

LEFT BACK: Luke Shaw

Shaw’s rampaging runs at St Mary’s became a trademark

13

Shaw’s rampaging runs at St Mary’s became a trademark

Once the most coveted teenager in the world, Shaw moved to Manchester United despite interest from Chelsea to become the most expensive teenager in world football.

A Blues fan when growing up, Shaw trained with the club’s development programme at the age of eight.

However, he was not granted an academy place and joined the Saints. By the age of 15, he was playing for the Under-18 side before making his senior debut at the age of 16 in 2012.

Under the guidance of Adkins and then Mauricio Pochettino, the left-back earned a spot in the 2013/14 PFA Team of the Year and his lucrative move soon followed.

SOLD TO: Manchester United (£33.75million, June 2014)

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER: Victor Wanyama

Wanyama was another signing from Celtic

13

Wanyama was another signing from Celtic

After a successful youth career in his native Kenya, Wanyama earned a move to Belgium before Celtic snapped him up in 2011.

He became the first Kenyan to ever score in the Champions League when he netted against Barcelona in 2012, a memorable game as the Bhoys managed to win 2-1 despite having 16 per cent possession.

A move to the Premier League followed in 2013 and the 27-year-old’s sheer size and physical prowess made him a near indomitable figure at the heart of the Saints’ midfield.

Although injuries limited his time on the pitch in his first season, his performances across the next two under Ronald Koeman were so well-received it became nigh-on impossible for the club to keep him. Former boss Pochettino brought him to north London, where injuries have again limited his game time.

SOLD TO: Tottenham Hotspur (£13million, June 2016)

CENTRE MIDFIELD: Adam Lallana

Technically gifted, the Englishman dazzled with his silky skills at Southampton

13

Technically gifted, the Englishman dazzled with his silky skills at Southampton

A legend at St Mary’s, Lallana played through League One and the Championship before becoming captain in the Premier League.

The midfielder initially learned his trade at south coast rivals Bournemouth before joining the Southampton Academy aged 12 at a cost of £18,000 in compensation.

His performances in the third and then second tier of English football caught the eye as he danced his way through challenges and continued to score and assist for fun as the Saints claimed the Championship title in 2012.

His two seasons in the Premier League while a Southampton player were equally fruitful, joining Shaw in the PFA Team of the Year in 2013/14 before Liverpool acted quickly to beat Manchester United to his signature.

SOLD TO: Liverpool (£25million, June 2014)

CENTRE MIDFIELD: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Oxlade-Chamberlain vies for possession with John O’Shea

13

Oxlade-Chamberlain vies for possession with John O’Shea

A Southampton youth graduate from the age of seven, Oxlade-Chamberlain excited fans with his direct running and pace on the wings at St Mary’s.

At just 16, he made his senior debut against Huddersfield Town. In the 2010/11 season, he marked his first start with his first senior goal and the hype began to gather pace.

His father, former England international Mark, told reporters he was keen for his son to join Arsenal after dominating League One defenders and the winger made the switch to the Emirates in 2011 for a reported £15million.

His debut came in the infamous 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford and, since then, his short career has been littered with highs and lows. Injuries and loss of form saw him slip in and out of the team before making the move to Liverpool in the summer of 2017 for £35million.

SOLD TO: Arsenal (£15million, August 2011)

LEFT WING: Theo Walcott

Walcott was destined for great things from his teenage years

13

Walcott was destined for great things from his teenage years

Shortly after leaving school, Walcott joined up with Southampton’s first team during pre-season training before the start of the 2005/06 season and never looked back.

Blessed with terrifying pace, the winger became the Saints’ youngest ever player at the age of 16 years and 143 days and remained in the first team after scoring against Millwall and Stoke City.

Arsenal confirmed they had agreed a deal with the teenager in the January of 2006, with the fee potentially rising from £5million to £12million based on incentives and add-ons. In the summer, he was shock inclusion for England’s 2006 World Cup squad.

Although his early promise has since faded, the 30-year-old is still a Premier League player with Everton.

SOLD TO: Arsenal (£12million, January 2006)

RIGHT-WING: Gareth Bale

Bale is considered one of the best in the world

13

Bale is considered one of the best in the world

At 16, Bale made his Southampton bow in the Championship and earned a reputation as a set-piece specialist for his incredible accuracy from dead-ball situations.

Credited as one of the most creative players in his first season, the Wales international soon garnered attention from Premier League clubs.

Bale moved to Tottenham in 2007, but the move initially did not work out. The youngster did not win a game he started until January 2010 when he replaced Benoit Assou-Ekoto.

A change in position gave Bale a new lease of life and after plundering 31 league goals in the 2012/13 season, he moved to Real Madrid for a world record fee and has continued to dazzle supporters across the globe with his exciting style of play.

SOLD TO: Tottenham Hotspur (£10million, May 2007)

STRIKER: Sadio Mane

13

The Senegal striker is one of the most in-form players in Europe

Starting his career at the Académie Génération Foot in his native Senegal, Mane moved quickly from Metz to Red Bull Salzburg after his glittering performances in Europe.

His time in Austria was marred by a sour point at the end when he refused to come on during a game as he tried to force a transfer away.

Before the summer window in 2014 shut, Koeman splashed the cash to bring the forward to St Mary’s and was rewarded with pace, trickery and goals. He scored the fastest ever Premier League hat-trick at 2 minutes 56 seconds in a 6–1 win over Aston Villa in May 2016.

The 26-year-old continued to score throughout the 2015/16 season, netting in wins against Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool and it was the Reds who spent big to lure him away from the south coast.

Jimmy Shan: West Brom confirm caretaker manager will remain in charge for rest of season

Caretaker manager Jimmy Shan will remain in charge of West Brom for the remainder of the season, the Championship club have confirmed.

The 40-year-old has overseen four wins in six games since being appointed caretaker when the Baggies sacked Darren Moore last month.

While there was never an official approach, Albion wanted Preston boss Alex Neil but the Scot signed a new three-year deal at Deepdale on Sunday.

Shan said: “I’m happy that we can now move forward with clear planning and direction for the remainder of the season.

“It won’t change the work ethic and application of the players and the staff but it enables us to crack on with a clear target in our sights.

“From a personal point of view there is huge, huge pride to be given the responsibility. For me it is a chance to see the journey through that began at the end of last season.

“I’ve heard it said that with two or three extra games we may have stayed up last season. My aim is to make sure we get those extra games at the end of this season and complete our road back to the Premier League.”

Albion are fourth in the Championship and they remain on course for the play-offs with four games remaining after beating Neil’s Preston 4-1 at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

“Jimmy has fully earned this opportunity to take us through to the end of the campaign,” technical director Luke Dowling told the club’s website.

“He has earned the support and confidence of the players who have bought into the structural and organisational changes Jimmy has introduced. He has the backing of everyone to push on now and take us forward with momentum.

“Of course he recognises, as do we, that there is space for some more experience to join the coaching group and we expect to be able to clarify this element over the coming days.”

Celtic 1-0 Kilmarnock: Jozo Simunovic’s second-half header sees Hoops edge past Killie to go 12 points clear

Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic paid his own fitting tribute to the late Billy McNeill by heading in the winner against Kilmarnock at Parkhead.

In was an emotional day following the death of the man who captained the side that won the European Cup in 1967 and later went on to manage the club.

Despite being mostly on the back foot Killie arguably had the better chances before the break while Celtic had numerous and mostly inaccurate efforts on goal.

However, Simunovic – wearing the number five so closely associated with McNeill – headed in a Callum McGregor cross with 67 minutes showing on the clock to give the hosts a 1-0 Ladbrokes Premiership win.

With three fixtures remaining, Celtic moved 12 points ahead of second-placed Rangers – and they could secure an eighth successive title as early as Sunday if their Old Firm rivals slip up at home against Aberdeen.

Interim boss Neil Lennon, who along with skipper Scott Brown had laid a wreath at McNeill’s statue outside the stadium before the game, made two changes with midfielder Tom Rogic and winger Scott Sinclair coming in for Olivier Ntcham and Jonny Hayes.

Injury and suspension meant Killie boss Steve Clarke had to field a makeshift central defence of on-loan veteran Alex Bruce and midfielder Gary Dicker.

On-loan midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu was not allowed to play against his parent club while Aaron Tshibola, Conor McAleny and Liam Millar were handed starts.

There was as an appropriate 67-second round of applause in McNeill’s honour before the game and when the action got under way Celtic, wearing black armbands with number five on them, looked most likely to make the breakthrough.

Brown, Emilio Izaguirre, Odsonne Edouard and Rogic all had efforts on goal of varying quality.

However, in the 14th minute there was a Killie penalty claim when Brown challenged defender Stephen O’Donnell inside the box but referee Willie Collum waved play on.

Four minutes later the Ayrshire side had a great chance when former Rangers winger Chris Burke found himself clean through on goal after the break of the ball but Hoops goalkeeper Scott Bain made a crucial block.

Bain then had to make good saves from Millar and McAleny as Killie grew in confidence.

In the 27th minute, Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer gifted Eamonn Brophy possession but made a fine recovery tackle as the Rugby Park attacker took too long to get his shot away.

It was another let off for the home side but Killie still had plenty of defending to do before reaching half-time goalless.

More attempts on goal by both sides followed early in the second half, most notably when Bain had to stretch to tip Burke’s curling effort from 20 yards over the bar after Hoops defender Mikael Lustig had passed straight to him.

It was a tightly fought affair at Celtic Park

Amid increasing Hoops frustration, Edouard curled a shot wide, Killie keeper Danny Bachmann made a great save from McGregor and O’Donnell stopped Edouard getting on the end of Rogic’s pass.

However, that frustration was replaced with joy when Simunovic leapt to head McGregor’s past the flailing Bachman.

The game stretched further as the visitors threw men forward in search of the equaliser – but perhaps the match was destined to be decided by Celtic’s number five.

The opening goal was a bullet header from Charlie from a Kris Commons corner with less than 7 minutes on the clock. Mulgrew could have added a second three minutes later when he combined with Commons on the edge of the area before trying to clip the ball past Cammy Bell in the Kilmarnock goal but on this occasion his attempt went wide.
