Juan Mata has thanked former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal for his heroic performance against Liverpool in 2015.
The Spaniard scored a brace in the match – including a stunning overhead kick – as Van Gaal’s Red Devils triumphed 2-1 at Anfield.
And in his weekly blog post, Mata revealed the match was one of the best moments in his career.
He wrote: “Last week many of you reminded me that it had been four years since that win at Anfield where I was lucky enough to score twice.

“One decides to become a football player for moments like that, the most special thing is to see the effect that it has on so many people, it gives a meaning to everything. It was an unforgettable day.”
Mata, who signed for United in a £37million deal from Chelsea in 2014, then wished Van Gaal well in his retirement and thanked him for the times they spent together – including the Anfield display.
He wrote: “Finally, Louis van Gaal announced his retirement recently.
“I wish him the best in the next chapter in his life and I would like to thank him for the time that we spent together (including that game at Anfield).”
Meanwhile, Van Gaal has been making the headlines in recent days for his comments about United and his time at Old Trafford.
He dismissed the notion that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has got Manchester United playing like they used to under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Furthermore, Van Gaal slammed United’s chief executive Ed Woodward for contacting his successor in the Old Trafford dug out, Jose Mourinho, behind his back.
