Notre Dame fire: Paris Saint-Germain owners urged to help fund rebuilding of ‘symbol of France’ after shock inferno

Paris Saint-Germain’s Qatari owners have been urged to help fund the rebuilding of Notre Dame cathedral after Monday’s fire.

L’Equipe journalist Erik Bielderman believes the club should put their support behind the project and help in the restoration of one of the capital’s most famous landmarks.

The iconic Gothic church was devastated by a huge blaze on Monday night, which destroyed the 850-year-old building’s spire and roof.

The source of the fire remains unclear. Fortunately, the building had been undergoing restoration work which meant some precious artefacts and statues were already out of harm’s way.

The cathedral’s main structure was also saved by fire fighters who prevented the fire from spreading.

A number of high-profile names have already pledged their financial support of the rebuild, including billionaire businessmen Bernard Arnault and François-Henri Pinault, whose company, Groupe Artemis, owns Ligue 1 club Rennes.

And PSG’s mega-rich owners, Qatar Sports Investments, have been urged to add their funds to the purse to help reconstruct one of France’s most famous symbols.

Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White on Tuesday, French sports writer Bielderman said: “It’s a county in shock.

“Notre Dame is not only a Paris symbol along with Eiffel Tower, it is at the very heart of Paris, the deep centre of France.

“The meaning is not only religious, it is part of our culture.

“We don’t regard Notre Dame as just a catholic cathedral. It’s France, it’s humanity, it’s culture, it’s civilisation. It’s like Big Ben or St Paul’s in London. It’s our heart, our soul, our culture.”

Asked if PSG are planning to help fund the future efforts to rebuild the cathedral, Bielderman said: “I believe so.

“Paris Saint-Germain could give a percentage of match tickets or anything fans buy to help rebuild.

“The Qatari owners may donate something – that should be something they should do.”

The journalist also believes the club could make a special tribute to the iconic church – by changing the emblem on their badge.

“For one game maybe they could substitute the Eiffel Tower and have the Notre Dame logo on their hearts for their next game.

“That would be something magnificent.”
