Liverpool transfer news: John Barnes says Reds are unlikely to make ‘major signings’ this summer

Liverpool won’t be making any major signings this summer, Anfield hero John Barnes has claimed.

The Reds look likely to end the season trophyless despite confirming their reputation as one of Europe’s best teams, with Manchester City frontrunners for the Premier League and Barcelona all but certain to knock them out the Champions League at the semi-final stage.

But unlike when Liverpool last challenged for the title, under Brendan Rodgers in 2013/14, this is considered the start of a new era for Liverpool – rather than a one-off freak season.

Klopp looks certain to remain at Anfield for a number of years, and as long as he is in charge the Reds will surely be challenging for the highest honours every term.

Questions have been asked about just how Klopp can improve his current team, given they are a truly remarkable group of players in a system perfectly suited for them.

Nonetheless, Wednesday’s defeat by Barcelona showed a new striker is a necessity.

Klopp needs a player who can cover for Roberto Firmino, as Georginio Wijnaldum was forced to play in attack at Camp Nou due to the Brazil forward’s injury – and he did little to impress.

There have also been suggestions an attacking midfielder could be brought in this summer to offer something different off the bench and rotate with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Xherdan Shaqiri was expected to perform this duty when he joined from Stoke last summer, but it appears he does not have the required quality for Liverpool.

So summer signings are possible, and players have been linked with the Reds, but Liverpool legend John Barnes doubts there will be any incomings throughout the transfer window.

“The summer transfer window for Liverpool will depend on Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi staying,” said Barnes, speaking exclusively to BonusCodeBets.co.uk.

“When you look at Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain returning to the team, they won’t need to bring anyone in.

“It won’t surprise me if Liverpool don’t make a major signing. The fans and club trust in what Klopp is doing, so there won’t be any disappointment if he doesn’t sign anyone.”
