VAR to be used at Nations League finals between England, Portugal, Netherlands and Switzerland

Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be used at the Nations League finals this week.

UEFA announced the system will be used during the competition involving England, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Portugal.

A VAR team will be based at each stadium to support the referee and check for ‘clear and obvious’ errors relating to goals, red cards, penalty box incidents or mistaken identity.

It follows the successful introduction of the technology in the Champions League knockout stages and Europa League final.

It will be the first time VAR has been used in a national competition run by UEFA.

The head coaches of each of four teams involved were briefed in April on the use of VAR at the finals by UEFA’s chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti.

England head coach Gareth Southgate said: “We had positive experiences of VAR in the World Cup.

“My feeling both internationally and domestically is that, in the main, the big decisions have been right. The purpose of using VAR is to help the referees so I think it has been a help.

“You will never get a system that is 100 per cent fail-safe but the key decisions that are clear and obvious have been rectified. For me, that is a positive.”

The Nations League finals get under way on Wednesday evening with Portugal and Switzerland facing off in the first semi-final; the Netherlands and England clash a day later to determine the second finalist.

Both the third-place play-off and final take place on Sunday – and talkSPORT brings you full commentary of all four matches from the first ever Nations League finals tournament.
