Manchester United will need to tighten up their defence to improve on their sixth-place finish next season.
Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already ruled out a title challenge, but aims to regain a top-four spot.
And if they are to stand any chance of doing so, United can’t concede 54 goals like they did in the 2018/19 campaign.
It was the most of any side in the Premier League’s top six, while Wolves, Everton, Leicester City, and Newcastle United all saw their goal breached less than Man United’s.
So who can help them in their quest to improve their defence? Here are the players that have been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.
LATEST FOOTBALL STORIES
Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli)
Koulibaly is reportedly United’s number one transfer target.
The towering centre-half could transform the club’s defence in a similar way in which Virgil van Dijk has done with Liverpool.
It is believed United would have to spend in excess of £100million for the Senegal international, who only signed a new five-year deal with Napoli last August.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Crystal Palace)
Earlier this month, Wan-Bissaka revealed he intends to be a Crystal Palace player next season, but that could change if Manchester United come calling.
The Red Devils have been linked with a £50million move for the youngster, who has starred for the Eagles, making 35 appearances in the Premier League. With Antonio Valencia leaving Old Trafford after ten years of service, it leaves Diogo Dalot as the club’s only right-back with first-team experience.
At just 21 years old, Wan-Bissaka will only get better with time.
Matthijs de Ligt (Ajax)
Ajax boss Erik ten Hag and director of football Edwin van der Sar expect De Ligt to leave the club this summer.
The 19-year-old has been a standout performer in the Champions League this season as he helped his side knock out Real Madrid and Juventus. He is also on the verge of captaining Ajax to a first league title since 2014.
De Ligt is reportedly being chased by Barcelona, United, Manchester City, Juventus and Bayern Munich. Similarly to Koulibaly, De Ligt could be the leader Solskjaer’s side need at the back.
Harry Maguire (Leicester)
The Sun claim Maguire played his final game for Leicester in Sunday’s goalless draw with Chelsea.
United have been long-term admirers of the England international, who was one of ex-boss Jose Mourinho’s top targets last summer.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are also believed to be tracking the £60million-rated defender. Maguire signed a new five-year contract last September, which would allow Leicester to command a huge fee for their star man.
