‘I want to enjoy my family’ – Chelsea and Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain confirms international retirement at 31

Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain has announced his retirement from international football with Argentina.

The 31-year-old, who moved to Chelsea in January on a loan deal from Juventus, scored 31 goals in 75 appearances for the Albiceleste.

Having made his international debut in 2009, Higuain’s final appearance came in a 2-1 win over Nigeria in the World Cup last June.

Explaining his decision in an interview with Fox Sports, Higuain said: “My time with Argentina is over. Thinking things through in depth, my time is up.

“To the delight of many, now I will only look at it from the outside. I have spoken to (manager Lionel) Scaloni and told him my point of view.

“I’ve made the decision because I want to enjoy my family, I want to spend time with my daughter, and at the same time, I feel that I gave my country everything I could.”

Football: Chelsea's Olivier Giroud seeks France return to boost game time

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud wants to move back to France when his contract expires at the end of the season after growing frustrated by a lack of playing time under manager Maurizio Sarri.
Giroud has not started a Premier League game for Chelsea since the club signed Argentina international striker Gonzalo Higuain in January.
"The future may be hectic this summer," Giroud told French radio station RTL. "I'm not afraid to go down a level to have more playing time. It could be I end my career in France."
The striker, who won the World Cup with France last year, scored 33 goals in 73 league appearances for Montpellier before moving to Arsenal in 2012, and has attracted interest from Olympique Lyonnais, according to reports in the French media.
The 32-year-old has been used mainly in the Europa League by Sarri and is the competition's top scorer this season with nine goals in nine appearances, but does not believe he can force his way into the Italian coach's Premier League plans.
"Today, I have the impression there's clearly no competition (for places in attack) since January. It's like that, I know that I will only play in the Europa League," Giroud added.
"I try to do what it takes to be as effective and as important as I can for the team." Chelsea are sixth in the Premier League, three points below the fourth and final Champions League qualification place currently occupied by Arsenal.
Sarri's side could also secure Champions League football for next season by winning the Europa League, where they face Slavia Prague in the quarter-finals.

The penultimate round of fixtures began on Friday night with Everton securing a 2-0 win over Burnley at Goodison Park.

And although there are only five fixtures on Saturday, they have produced plenty of excitement so far.

BOURNEMOUTH 1-0 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Tottenham’s Premier League top-four fate will go down to the final day after they suffered a late 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth having had two men sent off.

Juan Foyth and Heung-min Son were sent off at the Vitality Stadium

Spurs would have guaranteed Champions League football next season had they won on the south coast but red cards for Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth killed their chances of that as they fell to Nathan Ake’s late goal.

  • Spurs players rated and slated

They looked like they were going to earn a valiant point in what would have been their first away draw of the season until Ake headed home an injury-time corner for the Cherries.

Son had earlier walked for pushing Jefferson Lerma and Foyth was sent off three minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute for a reckless tackle.

It means Spurs are likely to have to beat Everton in their final game next Sunday to be guaranteed a fourth successive year of Champions League football, unless Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all lose this weekend.

WEST HAM 3-0 SOUTHAMPTON

Marko Arnautovic scored his first goals since January as West Ham swept aside Southampton 3-0.

The Austrian, whose form had deserted him since a lucrative move to China failed to materialise during the transfer window, found the net twice to sink the Saints.

Ryan Fredericks hit the third as West Ham secured their biggest home win of the season in their final outing at the London Stadium.

Wolves sit seventh ahead of next weekend’s season finale which would book them a Europa League qualifying spot if Watford lose the FA Cup final to Manchester City.

CARDIFF CITY 2-3 CRYSTAL PALACE

Cardiff have been relegated to the Championship following a 3-2 defeat at home to Crystal Palace.

The Eagles took the lead just before the half hour mark thanks to a neat finish from Wilfried Zaha, who slotted home his tenth goal of the season.

The Bluebirds responded brilliantly and their efforts paid dividends when Martin Kelly clumsily turned the ball into his own net but Michy Batshuayi restored Palace’s lead.

Neil Warnock̢۪s men came out fighting in the second-half and came closest to equalising when Kenneth Zohore could not divert his shot past Vicente Guaita in a one-on-one.

Andros Townsend all but sealed Cardiff̢۪s fate on the 70 minute mark after firing a low strike against the post and into the net, with Bobby Reid̢۪s fine effort in added time a mere consolation for the Welsh outfit.

NEWCASTLE 2-3 LIVERPOOL

Mohamed Salah was carried from the pitch on a stretcher as substitute Divock Origi kept Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes alive with a last-gasp winner at Newcastle.

The Egypt international was hurt in a collision with Magpies keeper Martin Dubravka 68 minutes into a pulsating encounter at St James’ Park to leave his participation in Tuesday night’s Champions League semi-final second-leg clash with Barcelona in doubt.

His misfortune came during a breathless 3-2 victory at St James’ Park which leaves the Reds two points clear of Manchester City, who play Leicester on Monday evening, and ensured that the race for the title will go to the final day of the season.

The Magpies levelled twice as Christian Atsu and Salomon Rondon cancelled out goals from Virgil Van Dijk and Salah, but it was Origi, whose late intervention clinched the derby victory over Everton earlier this season, who came to the rescue with just four minutes remaining.

Reiss Nelson takes on the Poland defence

England took the lead on 13 minutes through Dominic Calvert-Lewin after great work from Reiss Nelson.

The Arsenal winger, who is on loan at Hoffenheim, skipped past the goalkeeper and showed great composure to square for the Everton striker.

However, the scores were level when 19-year-old Sebastian Szymanski curled a 30-yard free-kick into the top corner of Angus Gunn’s net.

Inexplicably, the Southampton shot-stopper refused to have a wall and was made to pay as the ball sailed into the top corner.

STAR MAN – James Maddison

Although he was afforded plenty of the ball, the Leicester City man looked a class above the opposition.

His confidence from a fantastic debut season in the Premier League season for the Foxes is evident to see as Maddison was always available to receive a pass and looked to make things happen.

Tricky on the ball and with the versatility to play across the attacking midfield positions, it is clear to see why the former Norwich City starlet has created 81 chances this season – the most in Europe.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

While Jadon Sancho may have earned the majority of the plaudits for his exploits in Germany, it has allowed Nelson to thrive in the Bundesliga.

His assist for Calvert-Lewin in the first half showed maturity beyond his years and portrayed the sort of technical ability which has had Gunners supporters eagerly awaiting the return of the winger.

With Denis Suarez set for an instant return to Barcelona, do not be surprised to see Nelson slot into the Arsenal attack in the not-too distant future.

Tottenham transfer news: Spurs line up Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha as replacement for Hugo Lloris – reports

Tottenham have identified Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha as a potential long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris, reports claim.

Spurs captain Lloris was responsible for Liverpool’s winner in the 2-1 defeat on Sunday – the latest in a string of high-profile errors this season.

And while manager Mauricio Pochettino has publicly backed his goalkeeper, The Sun reports that Tottenham scouts have watched Strakosha several times.

The 24-year-old Albania international, valued at £35million, has impressed for the Serie A club this season.

Meanwhile Lloris, 32, has been heavily criticised by pundits for his form this term.

talkSPORT host Tony Cascarino believes Spurs must find a better goalkeeper if they want to win silverware.

He said: “I will be surprised long term – and I am talking into next season – if Pochettino doesn’t buy another goalkeeper.

â€Å“I don’t think he is as good as what you need between the sticks to go and win things.”

Pochettino, however, has refused to criticise the Frenchman and confirmed he will retain his starting place against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

â€Å“He is my captain,” Pochettino told the media. â€Å“He’s one of the best keepers in the world. There’s no doubt. There’s no doubt that Hugo is one of the best and he’s going to be in the goal.

Football: 'I made a mistake', says Pochettino, but he slams 'sloppy' Spurs

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino took his share of the blame for "sloppy" Tottenham's 1-0 Champions League semi-final first leg defeat against Ajax after admitting he used the wrong tactics.
Pochettino's side made a dismal start as Donny van de Beek put Ajax ahead after just 15 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday (April 30).
Ajax dominated the first half until Pochettino completely changed his game-plan by switching from a 3-5-2 formation to a 4-4-2 system.
Aided by the introduction of Moussa Sissoko for the injured Jan Vertonghen, Tottenham regained a measure of control without ever hurting Ajax with their long-ball barrage.
Pochettino conceded he had blundered with his game-plan, but the Tottenham manager was also angry with the lethargic way his players started the club's first European Cup semi-final for 57 years.
"Watching now of course I can accept it was a mistake the shape we used. But there were not too many options," Pochettino told BT Sport.
"I am not happy. But our lack of energy from the beginning made our game difficult. We were a little sloppy.
"It was not the shape that conceded the goal. Our approach to the game was not good. I am the manager so I have responsibility."

Tottenham were hamstrung by the absence of injured striker Harry Kane and suspended forward Son Heung-min.
But Sissoko's dynamic contribution and the return of Son for next week's second leg in Amsterdam give Pochettino hope they can still reach the final.
"After we conceded the goal, 25 to 30 minutes in, we started to be in the game. Moussa Sissoko provided good energy," he said.
"Second half we pushed them and tried to create chances. It was an even game in the second half.
"We are alive. It's only 1-0 down. We need to believe we can go there and win the game."
It remains to be seen whether Vertonghen will be fit for the return after the centre-back appeared to suffer a concussion in a clash with team-mate Toby Alderweireld.
Vertonghen went off for treatment, but was then surprisingly sent back onto the pitch by Tottenham's medical staff.
He looked groggy and on the verge of throwing up before being helped down the tunnel after signalling he couldn't continue.
Asked about the severity of Vertonghen's problem, Pochettino only said: "I didn't see him. Of course, we will assess him in the next few days."

Ruben Loftus-Cheek to stay at Chelsea as there is ‘no reason for me to leave’

Ruben Loftus-Cheek to stay at Chelsea as there is ‘no reason for me to leave’

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has revealed he has no plans to leave Chelsea.

The 23-year-old has nine goals for the Blues this season but has been mostly utilised from the bench.

Many Chelsea fans have called for the England midfielder to be given more minutes on the pitch and there were some fears he could leave in search of regular first-team football.

Loftus-Cheek has two years left to run on his Blues deal and they are keen to tie him down to a longer-term deal.

The news he wants to stay will be a boost as they saw their appeal against their two transfer window ban rejected.

When asked if he is already in talks over a new deal, Loftus-Cheek grinned and said: “I’m not sure, I let my agent deal with it. I’m not thinking about that right now.

“It’s important for me to focus on the here and now, and I’m playing right now.

“It’s looking good so there’s no reason why I should think about leaving Chelsea.”

And when told he deserves a pay rise, Loftus-Cheek laughed and added: “There’s no reason for me to leave. If I get a pay rise, that’ll be great.”

Loftus-Cheek will take a pivotal role in Chelsea’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.

N’Golo Kante will miss out due to a hamstring issue that leaves the France World Cup-winner in a race against time to be fit for the Europa League final should Chelsea reach the May 29 showpiece.

Loftus-Cheek has battled injury problems of his own and Blues manager Maurizio Sarri has previously admitted fearing the midfielder could battle niggling back problems for the rest of his career.

But the England international is confident he can overcome his long-term back spasms.

“I’ve had back injuries, lower back spasms, since I was 16 or 17 up to now,” said Loftus-Cheek.

“It’s something I’ve had in the latter part of my career, and it’s something I’ve had to deal with and manage with the physios. It’s hindered me a lot.

“But over the years learning about my body with the physios, we’ve come up with a routine to keep it at bay. We’re working a lot.

“I don’t think it’s something I’ll have to suffer for the rest of my career. I’m feeling really good now, the best I’ve felt. I’ve not had a twinge in my back for weeks now. It’s looking really good.

“Playing the most games I’ve played this season, playing every three days, it’s something I’ve never done before.

“It’s important I get the right rest so my back’s OK. So I might not do a whole training session two days after a game. I might just do half of it. I taper it that way.

“It’s a good feeling to be seen as an important player for the team, to help the team win games. I think it’s something I’ve never felt in my career.

“I’ve always been on the bench. At Palace, I felt like an important player, that I could help the team win games and be one of the main men in the team.

“Hopefully with more games and experience, I can be that player for Chelsea, too.”

Bolton Wanderers players strike over unpaid wages days before High Court hearing

Bolton Wanderers players strike over unpaid wages days before High Court hearing

Bolton players have gone on strike for the second time this year after the Championship club failed to pay their staff for March.

Employees have not been paid on time for a second month in a row as uncertainty continues to cloud Wanderers.

On Wednesday, the High Court will hear a winding-up petition issued by HMRC over an unpaid tax bill of £1.2million, having adjourned the case on March 20.

Owner Ken Anderson had been hoping to sell Bolton before Wednesday’s High Court hearing

Bolton had told the High Court they were in the process of selling the club but no deal has been finalised, leaving staff facing late payment once again.

Players have been angered by the lack of information they have received regarding a potential takeover or Wednesday’s hearing, leading them to take action on behalf of all club staff.

Wanderers still face the threat of liquidation or administration, but the adjournment means they have avoided a 12-point deduction this season.

Such a deduction may prove academic anyway, with Bolton still five points adrift of safety in the Championship despite Saturday’s 2-1 away win over QPR which led the London club to sack Steve McClaren.

Bolton have already faced winding-up petitions over unpaid tax and VAT five times in the last 18 months.

They won a similar stay of execution in the High Court three years ago to allow previous owner Sports Shield BWFC to complete a last-minute takeover.

Current owner Ken Anderson bought a stake in the club during that buyout and took majority control in 2017 after Sports Shield went into liquidation.

Anderson, who owns 94.5 per cent of the club’s shares, has increasingly struggled to finance the running costs.

The players were paid their February salaries late and the training ground was closed for a day earlier last month, while there was doubt over a recent game against Millwall going ahead due to concerns over policing costs.

Bolton also face further legal action from League Two side Forest Green, who have started proceedings over the failed transfer of striker Christian Doidge.

Bolton officials are due in the High Court in central London Wednesday, April 3, 2019 over an unpaid tax bill of 1.2 million pounds ($1.6 million) and other debts. Its players are on strike over unpaid wages and the team is on the verge of relegation to the third tier.
