Tottenham vs Manchester City: Pep Guardiola explains ‘Harry Kane team’ comments – ‘I cannot say that or Mauricio will be angry’

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has once again sought to clarify comments he made about Tottenham ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg match.

Spurs entertain City at their new stadium on Tuesday night in what is arguably the pick of the last eight ties.

The Citizens’ boss came under fire from Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino for comments he made about Spurs in October 2017 as he labelled them the ‘Harry Kane team’.

Guardiola admitted in October 2018 that he was wrong to give Spurs that label.

And in his pre-match press conference, Guardiola refused to make the same comments through fear of upsetting opposite number.

Pochettino accused Guardiola of being ‘disrespectful’ for his original comments

Guardiola also reiterated his point that the original comments were meant as a compliment to Kane.

He said: “No I cannot say that [Spurs are the ‘Harry Kane team’] or Mauricio will be angry and I don’t want it.

“I think my colleague misunderstood me in that period, Kane had scored a lot and that was why I said it.

“I know Spurs is not just Harry Kane, the club is strong and have a lot of potential. They are strong in all departments.

“It’s an incredible team, Harry Kane who can deny is an incredible striker and he has everything. He is a modern striker but not just him, we know and we knew it then.”
