Bolton Wanderers news: Simon Jordan ‘still very doubtful about Laurence Bassini’s credibility’ as takeover is thrown into doubt

Simon Jordan has told talkSPORT he is ‘still very doubtful’ about Laurence Bassini’s credibility, despite the prospective Bolton owner insisting he has only good intentions for the in-crisis club.

Former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan has been vocal about his suspicions of twice-bankrupted Bassini, whose proposed takeover of Bolton has yet to come into fruition.

When the British businessman emerged as a candidate to purchase the club from derided owner Ken Anderson, Jordan said Bolton fans ‘would have an even bigger problem’ with Bassini in charge.

Bolton are in serious financial trouble and face an uncertain future

That prediction appeared to be quite accurate when reports emerged claiming Bassini had failed to come through on his promise to pay the players’ unpaid wages for March and April, which led to the Trotters stars striking and the postponement of their Championship clash against Brentford.

Further reports this week then claimed his proposed takeover was on the verge of collapse, as Bassini had yet to prove he has the funds necessary to purchase the club.

The EFL have now given Bassini 48 hours to provide proof he has the financial clout to buy Bolton.

BASSINI’S BOLTON TAKEOVER:

  • Bassini’s Bolton claims ‘a bag of nonsense’, claims Simon Jordan

  • ‘Bassini won’t have Bolton’s best interests in mind – just ask Watford fans’

But Jordan is still not convinced, despite Bassini calling the talkSPORT pundit in an attempt to clear the air.

Speaking to Jim White on Wednesday, Jordan said: “As you know, I know Laurence and have certain views about Laurence that I shared a few weeks ago that were very condemnatory and judgemental, about Bolton jumping out of the frying pan with Ken Anderson and into the fire with Bassini.

“Laurence phoned me the following week to say, ‘I don’t want any bad blood between us, I have serious intentions with Bolton and I have the means and wherewithal to do it’.

“I don’t think the fact he’s been twice bankrupt is relevant, because some very successful businessmen have been up and down and it’s not being down, it’s coming up again that’s important.

“But, I’m still very doubtful to Laurence’s credibility, credentials and financial wherewithal.

“I’m perplexed that Laurence has put himself in this situation.

“If you walk into any environment and you say you’re going to do something [referencing his promise to pay the players’ wages] and then subsequently don’t do it, you put yourself in an invidious position where people will question your credibility.

“He’s had enough questioning over his credentials, because he’s been interrogated about how many times he’d been bankrupt and he’s got the stigma with what happened to him at Watford.

“He was very keen to impress upon me that my judgement of him was wrong and that he would prove to be somebody the Bolton fans would want, someone who is committed to the club, would will drag them up and write out cheques to take them forward, which he said himself.

“To now be in a situation where Laurence is seemingly making statements about transferring money and making a commitment to players, it makes it look like a very unpalatable and unsatisfying situation.”

Jordan added that ultimately the decision over whether Bassini is the right man for Bolton has nothing to do with the EFL, who will sanction the deal from their side as long as he can prove he has the necessary funds to complete the takeover.

And if that doesn’t happen, it future of the Greater Manchester club appears very grim.

“It’s not up to the EFL,” the ex-Crystal Palace owner said.

“If he comes up with proof of funds and is able to get them across the line, the EFL will acquiesce because all they want is a safe football club.

“The alternative is Ken Anderson will fall on his sword and Bolton will go into administration.

“It’s a difficult situation because Anderson is now talking about meeting with his professional advisors, which means they are looking at administration.”
