Tottenham followed all the correct protocols after Jan Vertonghen suffered a serious head injury against Ajax, Mauricio Pochettino insisted last night.
A collision with team-mate Toby Alderweireld left him bleeding and briefly unable to walk during the Champions League semi-final defeat.
Vertonghen, who briefly returned to the pitch after a lengthy assessment before being substituted, had suffered concussion but Pochettino said all the correct medical protocols had been followed and the Belgium international left the stadium at the same time as his team-mates, stating he felt fine, having briefly fainted.
Spurs’ manager had to step in to stop the defender collapsing when his leg buckled as the 32-year-old was helped down the tunnel by medical staff looking ill and disorientated.

â€Å“I was not involved,†Pochettino said. â€Å“That was the doctor’s decision. It’s so important that the rules and the protocols are there. Our medical staff followed the protocol. I was never involved. The decision was the doctor’s. The referee asked, and we needed to take him out — he did not feel well.â€

â€Å“In this moment you are focused on the game and it is difficult to think too much,†Pochettino continued. â€Å“You must let the doctor or the medical staff do his job. For me the most important thing is the health of the player before the game.â€
Both Vertonghen and Alderweireld required medical aid after their collision, with the former’s face covered in blood. Spurs’ physios appeared concerned as they led him around the pitch perimeter after four minutes of treatment.
He changed out of his blood-splattered shorts and shirt and play was halted to allow for him to re-join the action. However, Vertonghen lasted just a few minutes before indicating he could not carry on and play was stopped to allow him to leave the pitch.
On the touchline his right leg buckled and Pochettino jumped in to steady him.
UEFA guidelines leave the question of a player̢۪s fitness to continue after a head injury in the hands of the club̢۪s doctor. The referee had consulted with Tottenham̢۪s medical team to check whether Vertonghen was able to resume but it quickly transpired that he was not at all well as he appeared to retch in full view of the fans and those watching on TV soon after being substituted.
On his team’s first leg loss, Pochettino said. â€Å“The team didn’t show the energy that we wanted. Ajax showed more energy than us. The way that we conceded the goal was so painful.â€
