Tottenham ‘now one of the greatest clubs’ in world football after reaching Champions League final, says David Ginola

David Ginola says Tottenham can now be considered one of the world’s great clubs.

The north Londoners followed Liverpool’s lead as they pulled off a stunning comeback in their Champions League semi-final against Ajax, to progress to the Madrid showpiece on June 1.

It is the first time Spurs have ever reached the final of the European Cup and Ginola says his old club can now be regarded among the elite.

He told the Sports Breakfast: “When you look at the players celebrating with Mauricio Pochettino and the fans at the end of the game, you realise how important it was.

“Everyone realised yesterday that Spurs is now one of the clubs to take into consideration.

“They have got every single thing to be a great club. They have got a great training centre, they have a great stadium and now they have a great team.

“The combination of Daniel Levy [the chairman], the club itself, Pochettino, the players makes Spurs what they are now on the planet of football – one of the greatest clubs around.”

Tottenham looked to be dead and buried against Ajax at half-time as they trailed 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate.

But Lucas Moura’s hat-trick –  the third in the dying seconds of stoppage time – clinched a remarkable away-goals win.

And Ginola praised Pochettino for his half-time tinkering, when he introduced Fernando Llorente for Victor Wanyama.

He said: “Wow, it was incredible. I couldn’t believe their performance and the faith they showed until the end.

“After the first half, I thought it was gone. The performance wasn’t there. Putting Llorente on made the difference. It is why Pochettino is a great manager.

“When the team is not performing well, he has the ability to see what is wrong and change it in a second.”

Premier League rivals Liverpool now stand in Spurs’ way of lifting the trophy on June 1 at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

“What a reward for English football – two clubs in the final in Madrid,” said Ginola.

“What an achievement. English football has been criticised – now you have two clubs in the final.

“For the Spurs supporters, what a reward it is. They have been waiting for so long. They are playing in the final of the Champions League – the biggest competition in Europe and probably the world as well. I’m so pleased.

“Both teams have been passionate about the game, it is such a joy to watch them both. Thank you Jurgen Klopp, thank you Mauricio for giving us so much.

“That is why we love football. When you watch such games, you think football is the greatest sport.”
