West Ham fans mock the atmosphere at Tottenham’s new stadium: ‘Is this the Emirates?’

West Ham fans were not impressed with the atmosphere at Tottenham’s new stadium when they experienced it for the first time on Saturday.

Michail Antonio’s fierce second-half volley saw West Ham secure a 1-0 victory and become the first team to defeat Spurs at their new ground.

And the Hammers, who notably beat Tottenham in the fight for their London Stadium, rubbed salt into the wounds by mocking their rivals over the lack of noise at the new White Hart Lane.

After a tense opening 30 minutes, the away section could be heard chanting, ‘Is this the Emirates?’

Arsenal are often derided for the supposed lack of atmosphere at their 60,000-seater stadium.

However, the atmosphere at West Ham can also be the brunt of jokes – not least by Hammers fans themselves.

Their taxpayer-funded, cost-effective home was built for athletics and still lacks the feel of a pure football ground.

Tottenham had proposed to tear down the Olympic Stadium and transform it, which is why the Olympic Park Legacy Company opted for West Ham instead.

Instead, Spurs’ £1billion stadium has reportedly left them in £600million worth of debt – but it is widely heralded as one of the finest in world football.

So while the Hammers were certainly the financial winners, any neutral would probably rather Tottenham’s ground.

We’re definitely not suggesting that West Ham fans are jealous.
